World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development<\/strong>, designated by UNESCO in 2019, is celebrated on 4 March to raise awareness and visibility of the importance of the engineering sector in meeting the environmental and sustainable development challenges of the future. This year’s theme is “Engineering solutions for a sustainable world”<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Engineering is the conjunction of the application of knowledge and practice to solve specific problems, using technical and scientific approaches to design effective and efficient solutions. Engineering professionals play a vital role in meeting basic human needs, alleviating poverty, promoting safe and sustainable development, responding to emergencies, rebuilding infrastructure, bridging knowledge gaps and promoting cross-cultural collaboration. Engineering is thus a key element in sustainable socio-economic development.<\/p>\n

ENGINEERING AND THE UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/strong> is an action plan for people, planet and prosperity, which also aims to strengthen universal peace and access to justice. To achieve it, it proposes 17 Goals with 169 integrated and indivisible targets <\/strong>covering the economic, social and environmental spheres. Engineers are now leading the way in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals by using their technical knowledge and experience to turn innovative ideas into sustainability projects for the benefit of society and the planet.<\/p>\n

HOW DOES ENGINEERING MAKE IT POSSIBLE?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Engineering, with its ability to innovate and solve problems, has been a transformative force in history, improving our lives and environment. Today, its relevance and urgency are more evident than ever. The world needs more engineers, equipped with the right skills and knowledge, to address current and future challenges with creativity and efficiency.<\/p>\n
