Indutec participates in the ARBÔRES innovation project for structural wood solutions in sustainable construction

INDUTEC, a company of the IDP Group, participates in the ARBÔRES R+D+i project , Entirely Biobased Structural Wood Solutions promoting the use of forest mass and the sustainable construction sector.

The overall goal of ARBÔRES is to drive a new paradigm in sustainable construction through the research of structural solutions focused on reconstructed timbers: cross-laminated timber (CLT, made by stacking and gluing layers made of timber boards in crossed directions) and structural composite timber (SCL, made from wood chips glued together depending on size and orientation), integrand:

  1. Efficient use of non-destructive pre-sorting of several high-potential underutilized timber typologies (as well as low-quality sections) to meet market demand.
  2. Research into bio-based adhesives and coatings from agroforestry resources (lignin and vegetable oils) in pursuit of integral sustainability.
  3. Validation and monitoring in modular structures.
  4. Implementation of innovative digital and environmental strategies of Digital Product Passport, supporting traceability, sustainability and circularity.

For the validation of all the proposed technologies, two structural elements of wood will be investigated: Cross-laminated timber (CLT) from the mixture of Pinus radiata and Eucalyptus nitens (underused species) and their combination, and the introduction of bio-adhesives and bio-coatings (from lignin and modified vegetable oils) in its industrial process and Laminated strand lumber (LSL) (specific typology of SCL solutions) from P. radiata and E. nitens and the introduction of bioadhesives and bio-coatings (from lignin and modified vegetable oils) in its industrial process.

INDUTEC will participate in the project by researching different environmental analysis methodologies and will carry out the Life Cycle Analysis of the most sustainable wood structural element solutions (CLT/LSL), including the different products and raw materials. In turn, it will provide a stream of data focused on the sustainability of the products for the digital passport platform.

ARBÔRES will be executed within a period of 16 months and is made up of a consortium of five multidisciplinary companies: FINSA (project leader), CROMOGENIA, TECDESOFT, MADERAS BESTEIRO and INDUTEC and the collaboration of the CETIM technology centre.
