BIM model supported virtual reality applications to design roads and motorways

The engineering group IDP, continuing its ongoing policy of innovation, puts on the market an hyperrealist application which allows the virtual driving on the roads and motorways that designs.

This type of simulation, which is carried out in parallel to the engineering project through the introduction of physics, communication and interaction through BIM models, allows to test in real time the solutions and to modify them ad hoc in order to guarantee that its design is the optimal one from all points of view.

With this new application, IDP enhances the engineering’s added value on the project from the customer’s experience perspective, adapting itself to the reality of the 21st century and introducing the simulators already used in Formula 1 into the design of conventional roads and motorways.

This way, IDP clients drive their vehicles using virtual-reality glasses, handling a steering wheel and using pedals, immersed in the roads and motorways projected taking into account:

  • State of the road (dry, rain, ice, …)
  • Surface roughness
  • Wheels’ adherence
  • Sort of vehicle (car, truck, trailer, …)
  • Visibility at all the spots
  • Bank at the turns
  • Signalling and protections
  • Etc.

In addition to having online information of telemetry with the vehicle’s main information data (speed, consumption, etc.), it provides their behaviour in an accident.

The new application has been put into service in the contract recently won by IDP in Brazil in order to design 9 roads in the state of Santa Catarina.
