FCC Medio Ambiente awards IDP the contract for the comprehensive project to modernise and improve the Las Calandrias Environmental Complex in Jerez de la Frontera

FCC Medio Ambiente has awarded IDP the contract for the comprehensive project to modernise and improve the “Las Calandrias Environmental Complex”, located in the Bolaños area in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), with a planned investment of 40.8 million euros.

The complex will serve 450,000 inhabitants of various municipalities in the province and will be managed by FCC Medio Ambiente for the next 20 years. The plant will have a total capacity of around 260,000 tonnes of waste per year, which is broken down into 195,000 tonnes of residual waste, 5,000 tonnes of light packaging and 60,090 tonnes of selective organic waste (FORS).

The project encompasses a comprehensive series of improvements to the facilities, including the automation of access control, the demolition of the current administrative building and the construction of a new one, the expansion of areas such as changing rooms and canteens, and the adaptation and expansion of car parks including different charging points for electric vehicles. The project also includes the creation of green areas, the organisation of traffic and security through visitor circuits and an integrated video surveillance system.

Also, the modernization, refurbishment and extension of the waste treatment facilities will allow the establishment of two shared-use waste treatment lines and one line for selective collection organic fraction or bio-waste (FORS) to achieve the greatest possible degree of flexibility and modularity. These lines will have the following treatment capacities:

  • Where treatment lines process waste from separate collection from EELLs, they shall operate with a treatment capacity of at least 6 tonnes per hour.
  • Where treatment lines process waste from residual fraction (RF) collection, they shall operate at a treatment capacity of at least 40 t/h.
  • When treatment lines process biowaste from selective collection of organic matter (FORS) and other collections such as vegetal waste, etc., they shall operate with a treatment capacity of at least 20 t/h.

One of the most important aspects of the reform is the environmental approach. The new facilities will be equipped with photovoltaic panels, energy efficiency will be improved with LED lighting and the valorization of recyclable materials contained in the different fractions will be increased, thus reducing the generation of rejects destined for landfill.

IDP will assume the responsibility of developing the basic and construction project and the technical assistance during the works. All services will be carried out using BIM methodology (Building Information Modelling), guaranteeing efficient management and compliance with the highest standards.

FCC Medio Ambiente, awarded the contract to manage the Las Calandrias Environmental Centre, is the FCC Group entity that provides environmental services to 66 million people in 5,200 municipalities around the world, including street cleaning, waste collection and transport, treatment and recycling, maintenance of green areas, maintenance of sewage networks, beach cleaning and energy efficiency services. It has 800 operational waste management facilities, of which more than 200 are environmental complexes. Processes 24.5 million tonnes of waste annually and produces 6.35 million tonnes of secondary raw materials (MPS) and refuse derived fuel (RDF)
