World Engineering Day For Sustainable Development
March 4 marks World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development, proclaimed by UNESCO in 2019 during its 40th General Conference, and set on this date to coincide with the anniversary of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), founded in 1968. The aim of this conference is to highlight the fundamental role of engineering in the construction of a sustainable and resilient future.
This year, the celebration incorporates the slogan: Smart engineering for a sustainable future through innovation and digitalization, highlighting the importance of emerging technologies and digital transformation as a driver of progress.
This day represents a recognition of the crucial work of engineers in the creation of infrastructures, technologies and solutions that allow us to move towards a more just, secure and equitable world. Over time, the celebration has established itself as a space for reflection and action in the face of major global challenges, including climate change, inequality and the need for sustainable development models.
World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development is closely linked to the 2030 Agenda and in the advancement of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure, highlighting the essential role of engineering in areas such as affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities, industry and innovation, and climate action. In developing countries, engineering remains key to ensuring universal access to basic services such as clean water, sanitation, energy and communications, while on a global scale the professions in the sector work to design solutions that help mitigate the effects of climate change and improve the resilience of cities.
This year, emphasis is placed on promoting the participation of young people and women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines, recalling that their involvement is essential to promote innovation and ensure the continuity of talent in the engineering of the future.
Among the outstanding initiatives this year is the Hackathon 2026 event, organized by WFEO with support from UNESCO, in which engineering students will collaborate in the development of innovative solutions aligned with the SDGs.
World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development is an opportunity to reflect on the vital role of engineering in building a better future. It is a time to inspire new generations and to mobilize governments, companies and society to invest in engineering solutions that promote sustainable development around the world.
The IDP-A Bureau Veritas Company Group joins this celebration, bringing its experience of more than 25 years in innovative engineering. Employing advanced methodologies such as BIM (Building Information Modeling) and a focus on digitalization to ensure efficiency in infrastructures, IDP reaffirms its commitment to sustainable innovation and the principles of the 2030 Agenda.
