World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development: Engineering at the service of the 2030 Agenda

March 4 marks World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development, proclaimed by UNESCO in 2019 during its 40th General Conference. This day aims to highlight the fundamental role of engineering in building a sustainable future. The date coincides with the anniversary of the founding of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) in 1968, a key organization in promoting this celebration.
This day is a recognition of the crucial work of engineers in building a more prosperous and sustainable future for all. Since its inception, it has become a space for reflection, collaboration and action in the field of engineering at a global level, especially in the resolution of challenges such as climate change and inequality.
World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development is intrinsically linked to the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The engineering sector plays a crucial role in achieving these goals, which range from eradicating poverty and hunger to promoting clean energy, sustainable infrastructure and climate action.
In developing countries, engineering is essential to ensure universal access to basic services such as clean water, sanitation, reliable energy, and communications. In every country, engineers are working to mitigate the effects of climate change, protect the environment, and build more resilient and livable cities.
In addition, engineering is at the forefront of innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and nanotechnology, which have the potential to transform our lives and solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.
World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development is an opportunity to reflect on the vital role of engineering in building a better future. It is a time to inspire young people to pursue careers in engineering and to mobilize governments, businesses and civil society to invest in engineering solutions that drive sustainable development around the world.
IDP joins the celebration of World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development, contributing its vast experience of more than 25 years in innovative engineering. Employing advanced methodologies such as BIM (Building Information Modeling) and a focus on digitalization to ensure efficiency in infrastructures, IDP reaffirms its commitment to sustainable innovation and the principles of the 2030 Agenda.
